Battlefield 3 Recon Builds
Like many classes in Battlefield 3, there are multiple ways to play with the Recon kit. In this article, we will be going over two of the most effective Battlefield 3 Recon Kit builds, one being good for Deathmatch and the other for more organized games.
BF3 Recon Builds – Classic Sniper

The Classic Sniper build involves putting together a kit which is for long-range sniping. This does not work on many maps or game modes due to the relative small size of most maps, but it can work in certain circumstances.
One example is Tehran Highway. This map is very long and straight. If your team controls the end of the map which has the highway that goes up the hill, you can simply lay down on the road and snipe players running down the road, and there is little they can do about it.
You cannot be shot from the side since that is out of bounds. Players really cannot sneak up on you here and can only approach from the front. Additionally, most players will be way too far away to actually do anything about it unless they are using a Sniper Rifle too, at which point it comes down to whoever has the faster trigger.
This works well with really any Sniper Rifle, but bolt-action rifles with more powerful bullets and smaller clip sizes tend to be ideal (bullets do more damage and are more accurate). You really do not get more than a single shot with this build anyway, so you need to be sure to aim properly.
The more important part is the attachments. You definitely want to use the 12x scope for maximal accuracy. Additionally, you will want a bipod to help steady the very unwieldy 12x ballistic scope (you can lay prone on Tehran Highway).
Finally, you want to add on a Tactical Light. Normally I dislike the tactical light, but on this map and with this build it is perfect. Yes, it gives away your location, but if you are laying in the middle of the road you are not really hidden anyway.
The idea here is that you are so far away that even though your opponent knows exactly where you are, they really cannot do anything about it as you are too far away to hit with anything but a Sniper Rifle.
From very long distances, the Tactical Light does not blind the enemy at all, but instead slightly obscures your location. It provides a bit of concealment and players can only hope to shoot at the light rather than lining up for a headshot.
This gives you a big advantage when fighting players who are trying to counter-snipe, as you can see their character’s head for the 1-shot kill, whereas they will not be able to see yours due to the tactical light obscuring their view.
I recommend adding on the Ammo Specialization, as odds are you will run out of ammo eventually since you rarely die when in this position.
Battlefield 3 Recon Builds – Spotter
If you are playing with a Support player or a teammate who is using a vehicle, using the Recon kit to scout is invaluable.
The Recon Kit has access to two valuable gadgets: the MAV and the SOFLAM. The MAV is a micro UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) which you can fly around and mark opponents with. The SOFLAM will automatically “paint” targets in front of it and can be controlled to “paint” more targets as well.
When you paint a target, it will get a mark on it for players using guided missiles. The Support Kit has access to the M224 Mortar, which launches missiles at enemies, but it needs a spotter to be used effectively.
If you mark your enemies with the SOFLAM or MAV (depending on map depends on which one you will want to use), your teammate an use the M224 Mortar to wreck havoc on your enemies. This works incredibly well, but does require 2 people to be used effectively.
Really any gun will work here, but I do recommend adding on the INVR optic. This way you can see players hiding out when you zoom in and mark them as well. The only downside to this build is that it does not earn you many points.
It does however help your team win and can single-handedly win games. This is something to use if you are playing cooperatively with a bunch of friends, but not really worth the effort in pick-up games.
Battlefield 3 Recon Kit Builds
By applying these two builds in addition to your standard build, you can work in long-range sniping as well as marking for players into your arsenal. This will help increase your versatility in larger games or on specific maps in Battlefield 3.
