Battlefield 3 – PC vs X-Box vs PS3
While previously it was thought that the PC was on the downturn as a gaming platform, PC gaming has seen a large resurgence thanks to Battlefield 3. In this article, we are going to talk about what the exact differences are between the PC, XBOX, and PS3 versions are so you know the pros and cons of each approach.
Battlefield 3: PC version vs X-Box 360 and PS3 – Graphics
Battlefield 3 was built for the PC. Not only was it built for PC gaming, but it was built on high-end PC gaming. In fact, at its release, there is no other mainstream game which is quite as demanding as Battlefield 3 on your computer.
When played at max settings, Battlefield 3 looks significantly better than when played on an X-Box or Playstation 3. I mean really – it looks A LOT better, and this is coming from someone who values gameplay over graphics.
The commercials and graphics you see on TV are replicated on the PC, not the console. The console games still look good, but you cannot really tell a difference between Battlefield 3 and other FPS games on X-Box, whereas Battlefield 3 looks a lot better than any other FPS when played on a PC.
BF3 Gameplay Differences: PC vs X-Box 360 and PS3
Graphics are not the only difference between the games. Given the constraints of PS3 and X-Box, console game sizes are actually much smaller than they are on PC.

What I mean by this is that the biggest games in BF3 on a console are 12 on 12, whereas on PC some games are 32 on 32! Some private servers are even 64 on 64 (private servers are against the Terms of Service – so use at your own risk).
Why is this relevant? Because some maps are built for 32 on 32 gameplay (or at least 16 on 16). When you play them on PS3 or X-Box and it is only 12 on 12, they feel very empty. You may feel like you are spawning really far away from the action and cannot find anyone, and that is just because some of the maps are underpopulated on console.
Battlefield 3: PC vs X-Box and Playstation 3 – Controls
Another major difference between PC and console is that players on a PC are using a keyboard and mouse whereas console players are using a controller. Anyone who has used both can tell you this is a major difference.
Playing on a keyboard and mouse is simply much easier and much more accurate. As a result, players are much more accurate on PC. You will die faster and take out other players faster. It is a much more brutal environment.
On PC, even if you are a newbie and you sneak up on someone and you do not take them out, you really messed up. A lot of times though on console a newer player will sneak up on you but not be able to aim fast enough or accurately enough to take you out, allowing you to get away or allowing you to turn around and take them out.
In short, better players tend to play on the PC, and the mouse and keyboard allows these players to be extremely accurate. This makes the competition on PC higher than on console versions of Battlefield 3.
BF3 Servers: PC vs PS3 vs X-Box
Another major difference between the games is the servers. On PC, you have the option to connect to a lot of different servers and it is free to play. The same goes for PS3. On X-Box, you need a valid X-Box Live membership to play online, which does cost money.
On the plus side, X-Box servers tend to be the most stable, followed by PS3. Despite the advantages of the PC version of Battlefield 3, it seems to be the least-stable overall and can be annoying when you are constantly dropped when trying to connect to a server.
Battlefield 3: X-Box 360 vs Playstation 3
There are no major differences between the X-Box 360 version and Playstation 3 version of Battlefield 3. The only major difference is listed above: X-Box players have to pay to play online (need valid X-Box Live membership), but their servers tend to be the most stable so it is not a big deal.
Battlefield 3 PC vs X-Box 360 vs Playstation 3
The bottom line is that the game does look better on expensive gaming PCs and offers players larger battles than it does on either console. Consoles tend to be more casual friendly and have better servers.
At the end of the day, most players are going to be happy with Battlefield 3. Hardcore enthusiasts should opt for the PC version, whereas more casual players will be fine with the console game.
