Battlefield 3 Game Modes

In Battlefield 3, players have access to a variety of game modes in Multiplayer. In this article, we are going to go over what those game modes are and give you a brief overview of what gameplay is like for these modes.

Battlefield 3 Game Modes – Rush

Rush is one of the game modes that the Battlefield series is known for. In Rush, players on offense are tasked with destroying pairs of M-COMs, whereas players on defense are supposed to protect those M-COMs.

The M-COMs are marked clearly on the map, and an offensive player can arm them by holding a button (button depends on your platform of course; it tells you on the screen what to hold) for about 5 seconds on top of an M-COM. When an M-COM is armed, the defense has about 20 or 30 seconds to disarm it (disarmed the same way it is armed).

The defense wins the game any time they are able to get 100 kills before the other team destroys the pair of M-COMs. As soon as the offense runs out lives (referred to as “tickets”) the game ends.

Offense on the other hand is a little more complicated. When the offense takes out the first set of M-COMs, a new portion of the map opens up and two new M-COMs appear. The offense then goes back to 100 lives. There are multiple sets of M-COMs on each map (for example, Operation Metro has 4 pairs of M-COMs and 4 different sections of the map for each pair).

BF3 Mulitplayer Game Modes – Squad Rush

Squad Rush is an off-shoot of normal Rush mode and involves just two single squads of 4 players fighting over a single M-COM. Both teams are on offense; if you take out your enemy’s M-COM before they take out yours, the game ends.

Since it is just 4 on 4, each kill and each player makes a huge difference. If you have a great squad, this can be a lot of fun. I do not recommend playing pick-up games on this mode as normal Rush is a lot more pick-up friendly.

Battlefield 3 Modes – Team Deathmatch

Team Deathmatch is definitely one of the more popular modes in Battlefield 3. This is the classic match which each team races to 100 kills with no objectives to take or defend.

Team Deathmatch maps in Battlefield 3 are much smaller than some of the other maps that you will find in games like Rush mode. As a result, close-quarters battle (CQB) is very common and you often spawn right next to hostile players.

As a result, Team Deathmatch games are action packed and rarely last more than 5-7 minutes. On PS3 and XBOX, these matches are 12 on 12, whereas PC offers larger game sizes.

BF3 Modes – Squad Deathmatch

Squad Deathmatch is a more intelligent and dangerous version of Team Deathmatch. In Squad deathmatch, your team just consists of your squad (4 players) versus other squads in a free-for-all setting.

In other words, there may be 4 teams of 4 all competing for the win. This would mean that in the game, you would have 3 teammates and 12 opponents. These games are definitely action packed given the 4:1 enemy to ally ratio.

Due to the small team size and large number of opponents, teamwork in these games is highly encouraged. Strategies can be used to take out hordes of uncoordinated teams and earn your team a quick win, which can be fun.

Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Modes – Conquest

The final mode in Battlefield 3 is Conquest mode. This is hybrid “King of the Hill” and Deathmatch game. Each team starts with 250 tickets, and the first team to run out of tickets loses.

The object of the game therefore is to preserve your tickets and deplete the other team’s tickets. Your team loses 1 ticket every time you die, whereas the other team loses a ticket every time you kill someone. You can also effect the score by capturing points on the map.

On each map, there are a number of flags. You can control the flags by having more players than the other team in their immediate vicinity. Controlling the majority of the flags results in the other team losing tickets. That is if there are three flags and your team controls two of them, the other team’s tickets will drop.

Note that the number of tickets lost by holding the flags is fairly moderate – it is not particularly large even if you control all the flags on the map. I would say you the other team loses 1 ticket every 2-3 seconds when you control every flag on the map. This means that these games do not end quickly even if you are completely crushing the other team.

Conquest is probably the fastest way to level up your overall rank and get promoted. The trick is to fight near a contested flag. Not only will you rack up a lot of kills, but if the flag keeps changing control you will earn tons of points very, very quickly.

Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Modes

You now have a complete list of multiplayer game modes in Battlefield 3. There is also a Co-Op mode where you and a friend can work through a variety of missions. Experience and unlocks you get during Co-Op does translate over to multiplayer, so it is definitely something to look into.
